How long does it take to recover from a calcaneal fracture?

Patient's question:

How long does it take to recover from a calcaneal fracture?

Doctor's answer:

A calcaneal fracture is usually caused by a fall from a height, resulting in a compression fracture due to the weight-bearing on the heel. If the talo-calcaneal joint surface is smooth and flat, and the calcaneal angle is intact, conservative treatment can be applied. For example, a cast needs to be applied for about six weeks. After removing the cast, crutches can be used for partial weight-bearing, while walking with crutches. Simultaneously, foot soaks with hot water should be performed to stabilize the circulation. Oral medications that promote blood circulation and accelerate bone healing should also be taken. Approximately three months later, crutches can be removed and full weight-bearing walking can begin.
