Features: The Yuan Dynasty was the stage for literati painters. The group of painters composed of scholar-officials and hermits led a revolution in painting styles and tastes, transforming the already artistically supreme "Song painting" into the "Yuan painting" system, characterized by lofty and elegant tones and refined charm. From the perspective of art history, "Yuan painting" is a complex composite, including the "scholar-official painting" of the early Yuan, the landscape painting of the "Li-Guo school," and the ink bamboo painting of the "Wen-Su school." However, what truly represents the specific connotations of "Yuan painting" is the landscape painting of the "Four Masters of the Late Yuan," and Ni Zan, renowned for his bleak and distant artistic style, pushed the unique qualities of "Yuan painting" to their zenith. Ni Zan's art is not only a case study in the history of Yuan Dynasty painting but also a highly significant topic in the entire late Chinese painting history. For centuries, the art world has continuously focused on and discussed his work. However, academic research on Ni Zan only gradually took a more systematic and comprehensive path after the early 20th century. In recent years, with the collection and organization of biographical materials and in-depth studies of his artistic style, this topic has achieved notable results, though it remains shrouded in controversy. The ten or so related essays selected for this issue of Du Yun reflect the research achievements in the past few decades on the painter's life, artistic thought, works, and style. We hope to conduct a more multidimensional examination of this topic in a broader historical context in the future and further advance related research.
