Does the flu cause myocarditis?

Patient's question:

The other day I got the flu, hiccuping, runny nose, and fever, and coughing—various cold symptoms were particularly painful. These past few days, I haven’t been able to work normally. But recently, I’ve noticed some discomfort in my heart. The doctor said it’s myocarditis. Can the flu cause myocarditis?

Doctor's answer:

The flu is caused by the influenza virus. It is essential to actively treat influenza, drink more water, eat more vegetables and fruits to replenish vitamin C in the body, and thereby enhance the immune system. After getting the flu, the body may develop complications, and viral myocarditis is one of the complications of influenza. Now that you have been diagnosed with myocarditis, if the condition is mild, treatment at home is sufficient. However, if the condition is severe, hospitalization is necessary. Early antiviral treatment is required, along with corticosteroids for anti-inflammatory effects and myocardial nutrition therapy. Most importantly, it is crucial to ensure the patient gets adequate rest for three full months. Even after discharge, physical and mental labor should be avoided.
