Is it a miscarriage if you have sex and bleed at 12 weeks pregnant?

Patient's question:

I got pregnant not long after getting married to my husband, and my husband has a high libido. So, even though I was pregnant for two months, I had sex with him. But then I started bleeding vaginally, which made me very worried. That's why I'm eager to ask the doctor now and want to know what's wrong with bleeding after having sex at two months of pregnancy—is it a sign of miscarriage?

Doctor's answer:

First trimester bleeding during pregnancy is first considered as threatened miscarriage, requiring a thorough examination and diagnosis. After confirmation of an intrauterine pregnancy, the bleeding following normal sexual activity is likely due to sexual stimulation causing vaginal bleeding with signs of threatened miscarriage. An ultrasound examination can be performed to check for any abnormalities in the gestational sac and embryo's growth. If there are no abnormalities, absolute bed rest can be recommended along with medication for pregnancy preservation. Avoid sexual activity in the near future.
