Publishing Date: 2007-01-01
Features: To facilitate readers in understanding and appreciating poetry from both Chinese and English perspectives, this book adopts a bilingual (Chinese-English) writing style throughout, with introductions and annotations provided in both languages, and each poem accompanied by a translation. The English poetry world is vast, and the poems selected in this book are merely a drop in the ocean. The authors have strived to encompass the glorious history and major schools of English poetry. Among the 36 carefully selected poems, there are both realistic and romantic works, as well as those reflecting classical and modern styles. The poets include not only English and American poets but also Irish poets. The selection ranges from Shakespeare, one of the greatest poets in English literature and a master of the Renaissance, to Dylan Thomas, a surreal poet born in the 1920s. The poems were chosen with consideration for readers new to English poetry, with most being concise and impactful. For some outstanding long poems, only the most essential excerpts are included. It is hoped that through this book, readers, especially university students, will enhance their appreciation of English poetry, grasp its fundamental characteristics, spark further interest in learning, and improve their overall English skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Poetry is a treasure in the literary treasury. Poets, with their talent, combine content and form to create this exquisite art of poetry in language rich in musicality. Good poetry celebrates truth, beauty, and virtue, refining people's character. Poetry challenges the limits of content and form, and cultivating readers' reading and comprehension through poetry undoubtedly yields unexpected results. The aesthetic master Zhu Guangqian once said, "Poetry is the essence of literature, and all pure literature possesses poetic qualities. Good art is poetry." He repeatedly emphasized that to cultivate a refined literary taste, one should start with poetry; once one can appreciate poetry, one naturally becomes capable of appreciating novels, dramas, and other literary genres. He believed, "Studying poetry is the best way to approach the study of general literature. By exploring the path in poetry, further study of other literary genres becomes much easier." Based on his own experience, the master concluded that studying poetry is not the ultimate training in language and literature but rather a necessary training at the beginning. The master's conclusion, though directed at Chinese learners, equally applies to English learners. For English learners, studying poetry greatly benefits their English proficiency. English poetry embodies the fundamental characteristics of the English language. Mastering the rhythmic features of English poetry, such as the rhythm formed by stressed and unstressed syllables (corresponding to the tonal patterns of Chinese), is key to mastering listening and speaking skills. Reading English poetry and understanding its basic features can cultivate a sense of the English language. Just as Chinese children learn Chinese through early education by reciting Three Hundred Tang Poems, children learning English can develop their literary appreciation by studying English poetry from a young age, subconsciously influencing their future literary tastes. This book adopts a bilingual (Chinese-English) writing style to systematically introduce the phonetic, visual, and expressive aspects of English poetry.
