Features: The "Analysis of Classic Films" series has long been a foundational course in the Film and Television Arts discipline at Communication University of China, representing the most comprehensive course coverage within the university's arts programs. It has not only been widely embraced by students across various academic levels but also consistently praised by peer scholars and experts. This time, the series has been compiled into five volumes in book form. Each volume is both independent and interconnected, providing a systematic textbook for the "Analysis of Classic Films" series and meeting the needs of film and television arts education. The series has the following characteristics:
(1) Scientificity, Systematicity, and Originality
The "Analysis of Classic Films" series consists of five volumes: "Analysis of American Cinema," "Analysis of European Cinema," "Analysis of Asian Cinema," "Analysis of Chinese Cinema," and "Analysis of Documentary Cinema." These correspond to four courses—"Appreciation of American Cinema," "Appreciation of European Cinema," "Appreciation of Asian Cinema," and "Appreciation of Documentary Cinema"—for the director, cinematography, and director/writer majors in the Film and Television Arts College. It analyzes approximately 150 classic films, forming a complete film analysis system that covers major national/regional areas, key creative periods, and significant artistic schools of world cinema. This scientific division of film analysis categories and the practice of publishing in separate volumes are unprecedented in China. Existing professional books on film analysis in China are often small-scale, cover fewer films, and primarily focus on Western films. The five volumes of the "Analysis of Classic Films" series, while emphasizing the importance of Western cinema, fully highlight the artistic value of Asian and Chinese cinema, placing them on par with Western films. Moreover, the "Analysis of Classic Films" series is the first in China to include documentary films within the scope of film analysis, marking a pioneering contribution to China's film and television research and higher education in this field.
(2) Authority and Standardization
The "Analysis of Classic Films" series is compiled and written by renowned scholars, doctoral supervisors, professors, and researchers from Communication University of China and the China Film Art Research Center. The "Analysis of Classic Films" course is a foundational course for the arts disciplines at Communication University of China, covering nearly all art-related majors. However, it has long lacked systematicity and standardization, exhibiting a degree of randomness and fragmentation. One of the goals of publishing the "Analysis of Classic Films" series is to standardize and systematize the course across the entire university. In selecting film titles, the series prioritizes both artistic value and historical significance while also considering originality, avant-garde qualities, and contemporary relevance, ensuring undeniable academic authority. In terms of film analysis standardization, the series adopts the classic case-study method to provide comprehensive, in-depth, and insightful interpretations of each film. It not only captures the thematic ideas and spiritual essence of the films but also emphasizes their artistic techniques and aesthetic concepts. The analysis is both rigorous in dissecting elements and grand in its overall perspective.
(3) Applicability, Practicality, and Accessibility
The "Analysis of Classic Films" series originates from the film and television arts education at Communication University of China, where these courses have been rigorously tested by students and scholars over the long term. They possess both academic authority and the lively, dynamic atmosphere of frontline university classrooms. The series is not only suitable for teaching in all departments of film and television media universities but also serves as a textbook and reference for media-related majors in universities across the country. With its standardized format, vivid writing style, and sincere passion, the "Analysis of Classic Films" series expresses the reverence and love for film art held by generations of film scholars. This quality also connects the academic work closely with a broad audience, especially dedicated film enthusiasts. Ordinary film lovers can find kindred spirits in the "Analysis of Classic Films" series and, through studying it, enhance their appreciation of film culture. We have every reason to believe that the "Analysis of Classic Films" series will not only appear on the desks of many students and scholars but also be bedside companions for countless film lovers.
In conclusion, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the experts and scholars who participated in the planning, editing, and writing of the "Analysis of Classic Films" series. They have contributed an outstanding academic work to China's film and television arts education and research.
