What is neonatal jaundice with a yellow complexion?

Patient's question:

My colleague's wife went to the hospital to visit and saw tears on her face. I asked her what happened, and she said the baby was born with jaundice. I want to ask, what is neonatal jaundice?

Doctor's answer:

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) jaundice is divided into two types: Yang jaundice and Yin jaundice. Yang jaundice is characterized by a fresh yellow color, while Yin jaundice is generally less severe. Neonatal jaundice usually appears 2-3 days after birth, peaks at 7-8 days, and typically resolves around 14 days, though it rarely persists for more than 4 weeks. Your baby is now 39 days old and still has jaundice, which is worsening. This is pathological jaundice and requires examination to determine the cause and treatment. Generally, breastfed babies do not develop increasingly severe jaundice, and the jaundice is usually not severe.
