What should I do if I have ascites?

Patient's question:

A colleague said that his grandfather has been feeling uncomfortable with his liver recently. Yesterday, he took his grandfather to the hospital for a thorough examination. The doctor said he had ascites of the liver. He doesn't know how to take care of it and wants to ask the doctor what should be done when he gets ascites of the liver?

Doctor's answer:

Most ascites is caused by cirrhosis or liver cancer, although it may also be triggered by factors such as a decrease in portal venous pressure, increased liver protein production, and enhanced liver metabolism of estrogen. For patients with ascites, treatment can involve paracentesis to remove fluid from the abdomen, while intravenous albumin administration can help increase water excretion. Patients should rest, avoid smoking and drinking beer, and consume appropriate amounts of vitamins and proteins for proper digestion. A light and easily digestible diet is recommended.
