Is epilepsy hereditary?

Patient's question:

Diseases like epilepsy and epilepsy can be distinguished. It has been about 6 and a half months. There have been several relapses in the middle.

Doctor's answer:

Epilepsy, in very rare cases, has irregular intergenerational genetic interference. For the majority, it does not cause significant interference, and the extent of interference is primarily related to the cause. In primary epilepsy patients, the incidence rate among relatives is 3%-4%, while in secondary epilepsy patients, it is 0-1%. This proves that primary interference is more significant, and the closer the blood relationship, the higher the incidence rate. If both parents have epilepsy or if a child has already been affected, the incidence rate in the third generation is 20%. Therefore, although primary epilepsy patients can get divorced, they should avoid interference with conception. When determining direct relatives for epilepsy patients, it is advisable not to choose individuals who have had epilepsy or have a family history of it. The farther the blood relationship, the better.
