Why do people get liver cysts?

Patient's question:

I was carefully checked during a health examination and found to have liver cysts, but I don't feel any discomfort in my body now. Why would I have liver cysts?

Doctor's answer:

Most liver cysts are caused by developmental abnormalities of bile ducts during the embryonic period, and they can also be triggered by liver trauma, inflammation, parasitic infections, or other reasons. In the early stages, liver cysts usually do not show obvious clinical symptoms and are often detected only during routine health check-ups. Generally, treatment is not required. If the diameter of the liver cyst is less than five centimeters and symptoms such as liver area distension and pain occur, surgical treatment can be considered.
