How long does moderate childhood ADHD usually last with medication?

Patient's question:

My son was diagnosed with ADHD six months ago. The doctor prescribed medication to be taken regularly and in the right dosage, which has been working well. The child is no longer showing any abnormal behavior. However, now the child seems to be developing some resistance to the medication. Can we stop the medication? How long is it usually recommended to take medication for moderate ADHD in children?

Doctor's answer:

Some children with ADHD do not need to take medication long-term; they only need temporary medication. Some, however, stop taking it intermittently. Some parents do not let their children take medication regularly but only give it to them during final exams. Since ADHD is a chronic condition with a long duration, and medication cannot cure the disease, it requires a relatively long period of medication. If the medication period is too short or irregular, it will interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment. The course of medication is usually estimated in years, lasting for several years, and some children may even need medication treatment even after they become adults.
