Patient's question:
The child of my sister was born about a month ago, but the jaundice hasn't completely gone away yet, and her face is still yellow. I went to a local regular hospital or institution to get her tested for jaundice. The doctor said it's not necessary to drink anything for 10 or so. But it's almost a month now, and it hasn't gone away yet? How long will it take for it to completely go away? How long does jaundice in newborns take to completely go away?Doctor's answer:
If the baby is born with a total bilirubin level of 17 at five days, this is relatively high. It is best to hospitalize the baby to investigate the underlying causes and receive phototherapy treatment. In full-term newborns without any illness, jaundice typically persists for more than 14 days. After treatment, if the bilirubin level drops below the 95th percentile, it is recommended to focus on oral administration of Yinzhihuang until the bilirubin is controlled at the 40th percentile, with regular follow-up visits to closely monitor the condition. By observing the decline in bilirubin levels through urine tests, the progression of the disease can be inferred. In general, physiological jaundice can resolve within about a week. If the jaundice is too severe, phototherapy can be used for treatment.
