Why can't facial paralysis patients eat irritant foods?

Patient's question:

Can people with facial paralysis eat trigger foods? In daily life, in terms of diet and defense, it is recommended to wear masks, scarves, and other protective gear when going out, pay attention to rest and ensure sufficient deep sleep. During acute phases, it is not advisable to use hot water bags for warmth or to self-massage or rub the affected area.

Doctor's answer:

Bell's palsy is a condition where sudden weakness or paralysis of one side of the face occurs due to abnormal function of the facial nerve. Common symptoms include drooping of the mouth and eyes, where patients often struggle to perform basic movements like raising their eyebrows, closing their eyes, or pouting. In most cases, 70%-85% of patients experience complete recovery within 1-6 months. However, a small number of patients may not recover fully. If the condition persists for 6-12 months or longer, surgical intervention may be considered.
