Wondering what are the symptoms of epilepsy?

Patient's question:

I met my boyfriend through someone else's explanation. We have been together for 2 years now, and our relationship is great. However, before meeting him, someone told me that my boyfriend has symptoms of epilepsy. Recently, he hasn't had any episodes, so I'm not sure what the symptoms are.

Doctor's answer:

According to the clinical diagnosis of recurrence type, it is divided into:
1. Generalized tonic-clonic seizure (grand mal) - Sudden loss of consciousness, followed by intense pain that first becomes tonic and then clonic. Often accompanied by screaming, bluish complexion, incontinence, bitten tongue, foaming at the mouth or blood foam, and dilated pupils. The intense pain recurs after lasting for tens of seconds or minutes and then naturally subsides, leading to a state of coma. After regaining consciousness, there is a short period of dizziness, irritability, and fatigue, with an inability to recall the recurrence process. If the recurrence continues without interruption, resulting in a persistent state of coma, it is referred to as a status epilepticus (grand mal), which is often life-threatening.
2. Absence seizure (petit mal) - Sudden interruption of psychomotor activity, loss of consciousness, which may be accompanied by myoclonus or automatisms. Each episode lasts from a few seconds to over ten seconds.
