Patient's question:
My friend's son is just half a year old and has grown quite a lot. My friend thinks he is bigger than other babies of the same age, but hasn't noticed any other symptoms. He eats a lot, but had a cold about half a month ago, which quickly improved. However, his head seems quite unusual, and my friend is worried he might develop hydrocephalus. What are the symptoms of hydrocephalus in babies?Doctor's answer:
Hydrocephalus can be classified into congenital and acquired types, which can further be divided into communicating and non-communicating types. In non-communicating hydrocephalus, the obstruction occurs in the ventricular system; whereas in communicating hydrocephalus, the obstruction occurs in the subarachnoid space. Hydrocephalus is a condition caused by cranial disorders leading to excessive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage or (and) impaired circulation and absorption, resulting in an increase in the volume of CSF within the ventricular system or (and) the subarachnoid space.
