How is epilepsy caused?

Patient's question:

I discovered this very strange condition when I was a child. There are no special manifestations of it in daily life, but when it occurs, it happens suddenly—foaming at the mouth and being unclear-minded. I didn't know what was happening either. How should this condition be treated, and what should be paid attention to?

Doctor's answer:

During a seizure, quickly have the patient lie on their stomach without a pillow. Place a gauze-wrapped tongue depressor between their upper and lower teeth to prevent them from biting their tongue. Then, loosen their collar and turn their head to one side so that saliva can drain out naturally, preventing it from entering the airway and causing aspiration pneumonia.
If the seizure recurs, do not force water or gently press on limbs. Instead, apply pressure or stimulate acupoints such as Ren Zhong (GV26), He Gu (LI4), Zu San Li (ST36), and Yong Quan (SP1). At the same time, support the patient's lower jaw to prevent the tongue from obstructing the airway due to choking.
Facing the dangers of epilepsy, we should actively implement thorough examinations and treatments without avoiding medical attention. If epilepsy does not improve with treatment, it is essential to adjust the treatment plan promptly.
