What are the common symptoms of epilepsy?

Patient's question:

My cousin is 38 years old this year and suffers from epilepsy. Recently, he has been having frequent seizures. He is single and sometimes speaks incoherently. We are all very worried. He has been hospitalized several times, but the results have not been good, and he also lacks energy. Please help me find an expert to solve this problem.

Doctor's answer:

Epilepsy has a symptom called status, which refers to a single seizure episode lasting more than 30 minutes; or repeated multiple episodes lasting more than 30 minutes with incomplete recovery of consciousness between episodes. Convulsive epilepsy status is the most common, and it is prone to cause repeated brain damage. Non-convulsive epilepsy status is more commonly seen in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, characterized by atypical absence seizures, prolonged confusion, and may be accompanied by myoclonic or atonic seizures. Sometimes complex partial epilepsy can also present in a status, manifesting as delirium, automatisms, or abnormal behavior.
