Will pneumonia and emphysema be contagious?

Patient's question:

I am 29 years old. My maternal grandfather was carefully examined and found to have emphysema. I know that tuberculosis can be infected. Can pneumonia and emphysema be infected?

Doctor's answer:

First, not all cases of pneumonia are infectious; only a very small number of pneumonia cases are infectious, such as SARS in 2003. The main modes of transmission should be through respiratory droplets and airborne spread. Emphysema generally does not become infected unless it is caused by mycoplasma virus. If one is diagnosed with emphysema, most of the treatment focuses on clinical diagnosis and relief. Many expectorant and cough-suppressant medications are typically used, along with the appropriate use of antibiotics. This can not only enhance the effectiveness of treating emphysema but also help reduce one's own physical condition.
