How much water should newborns with jaundice drink?

Patient's question:

Hello, how much water should a newborn drink every day? How often should they be fed? How much should they drink each time? My baby is exclusively breastfed. Make sure she drinks more water! She doesn't drink and always sleeps! How can I wake her up even when I call her? How much water is appropriate for a newborn with jaundice?

Doctor's answer:

Babies under one month old (within 28 days of birth) are called newborns. Newborn jaundice refers to a condition characterized by jaundice in the skin, mucous membranes, and sclera due to abnormal metabolism of bilirubin, leading to a decrease in bilirubin levels in the blood. Proper hydration can only enhance the decomposition of bilirubin to some extent but cannot truly have a therapeutic effect. If the baby is exclusively breastfed, there is no need to drink so much. However, if the baby is formula-fed, it must be given between meals to avoid stomach upset. Give the baby an adequate amount of water daily, but not too much. Breast milk itself contains moisture.
