Does hypothyroidism affect having children?

Patient's question:

Patient is 29 years old. I have been with my boyfriend for over a year, and now, under the persuasion of both our families, we are preparing to get married. However, during the pre-marital health check-up, I discovered that I have symptoms of hypothyroidism. I don't understand what this means, but I am very worried. Will hypothyroidism interfere with conception?

Doctor's answer:

Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder, more prevalent in women, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:5. Hypothyroidism can affect various tissues and organs throughout the body. In severe cases, it may lead to abnormal heart function, infertility, and other issues. For female patients with hypothyroidism during early pregnancy, if they cannot be diagnosed and treated early, it can not only result in adverse events such as miscarriage, premature birth, and perinatal fetal distress but also impact the intellectual and physical development of offspring. During medication for hypothyroidism, a TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) level below 2.5 is considered non-interfering with the presence of a child.
