The publication of The Legend was a major event in the history of modern Chinese literature and established Eileen Chang's historical position in the process of modern Chinese literature. The New Literature Movement pioneered by the May Fourth Movement had evolved to this point, giving rise to a new developmental possibility. This volume, Eileen Chang Collection · Love in a Fallen City, includes the complete revised edition of The Legend, with appendices featuring the author's prefaces to different editions of The Legend and two creative reflections on Love in a Fallen City.
Love in a Fallen City is Eileen Chang's breakthrough work and masterpiece. The realistic and ordinary couple, Bai Liusu and Fan Liuyuan, are brought together by fate amidst the chaos of war, experiencing in an instant a "glimmer of true love" between "two ordinary spouses."
The works included in this volume have been meticulously proofread. As a writer with a distinct personal style, Eileen Chang's novels are particularly meticulous in their word choice. Beyond skillfully incorporating dialect, she often employs unique expressions that deviate from contemporary writing norms. To preserve the originality and richness of Eileen Chang's prose, unless there are obvious errors or omissions, this volume makes no changes, as stated here.
