Can children with pneumonia use hormones?

Patient's question:

The child suddenly started having a high fever of 38°C a few nights ago. Even after taking fever-reducing medicine, it didn't go away. The doctor at the hospital said the child had pneumonia and told us that using hormone medicine would help recover faster. But I'm a bit worried. I'd like to ask if pneumonia in children can be treated with hormone medicine?

Doctor's answer:

If your child is diagnosed with pneumonia, the effect of corticosteroids is very unsatisfactory, it can increase inflammation, eliminate bronchospasm, stabilize blood permeability and microcirculation, and reduce intracranial pressure. However, corticosteroids have certain indications for use. These include:
1. Severe wheezing or respiratory failure.
2. Obvious systemic toxic symptoms.
3. Septic shock.
4. Reappearance of brain edema.
5. A short-term accumulation of a large amount of exudate in the chest.
In the above cases, hormones can be used for a short term. If your child has the above symptoms, corticosteroids can be used.
