What are the characteristics of thalassemia?

Patient's question:

A few days ago, my sister went to the hospital for a thorough examination and was diagnosed with thalassemia. I would like to ask how serious thalassemia is?

Doctor's answer:

Like this type of anemia, in general, if it becomes severe, it can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, discomfort, or many heart-related diseases. Anemia reappears within a few months of birth, with progressive resolution of hepatosplenomegaly, jaundice, and developmental delay. Its specific manifestations include: a large head, widened eye distance, saddle nose, thin forehead, and weak cheeks. Its typical manifestation is a saddleback head, and long bones may fracture. Changes in the skeleton are caused by increased tension in the self-healing function of the bone marrow, widening of the medullary cavity, and thinning of the cortex. In very few patients, a chest mass may occur between the ribs and spine, and cholelithiasis and lower limb ulcers may be visible. Additionally, check for vitamin B12, folic acid, or ferritin levels.
