Can hyperthyroidism be cured?

Patient's question:

For this period, I've been feeling unwell, often experiencing palpitations, and have noticed trembling when holding things. There's a feeling of slight swelling in the thyroid area of my neck. After a thorough check-up at the hospital, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Can hyperthyroidism be cured?

Doctor's answer:

Hyperthyroidism is generally treatable. For diffuse toxic goiter, if medication is ineffective, surgery is usually performed to remove part of the thyroid. If surgery is not suitable, radioactive iodine (I-131) therapy can be used. However, these treatments depend heavily on the doctor's experience. If too much of the thyroid is removed, it can lead to hypothyroidism, which can be problematic. Additionally, swelling could also be a sign of a tumor, requiring further medical examination. You can try touching the area with your hand to check for hardness and consuming foods high in iodine.
