He is widely recognized as an exceptional poet in the literary world and was early on included among the masters of contemporary Chinese literature as a member of the "July Poetry Faction." In 1984, at the age of 64, he once again went into self-exile, transcending himself and implementing a "late-life reform," creating a series of poems unprecedented in the history of Chinese new poetry. At the age of 70, he published a lengthy prose poem titled The World Emerges from Chaos, over 20,000 words in length, and at 80, he published a long poem titled Life and Growth: Five-in-One, with over 400 lines. Even at 86, he remains tirelessly exploring, retaining his keen artistic sensibility, broad artistic imagination, and vigorous creative vitality. He is hailed as the "Peng Yanzhao phenomenon" in literature.
Mr. Peng Yanzhao is a modest and unassuming person, publishing few poetry collections. Today, few college students know of him or have read his works. His works are more often passed around, photocopied, discussed, and recited among people. Many have only heard of his name but have never seen his works, and even many literary critics and researchers struggle to systematically locate his works. This severely hinders the study of the "Peng Yanzhao phenomenon."
