Does Bell's palsy cause tongue numbness?

Patient's question:

Because I had an argument with my husband before and at that time I was lying outside alone for a whole night. When I came down the next day, I noticed that half of my face felt strange. It has been treated, but recently I feel like my tongue might be related to facial paralysis?

Doctor's answer:

The facial nerve indeed has a branch that controls the taste sensation of the front 2/3 of the tongue. Therefore, when some patients experience a recurrence of facial paralysis symptoms, they may also experience taste loss in the front part of the tongue, making it difficult to taste food. As a result, some patients mistakenly believe this is an issue with the tongue when, in fact, it is a taste sensation disorder. So, if you encounter similar issues, it is important to distinguish: if it is indeed a problem with the tongue without pain and unrelated to facial paralysis, then it is not connected to facial paralysis; if it is taste loss and the inability to taste, this is related to facial paralysis.
