What is alcoholic cardiomyopathy?

Patient's question:

Recently, I don't know why I've been feeling uncomfortable with my heart. Although I take medication regularly to control it, the effect isn't obvious. When I went to the hospital for a check-up, they also prescribed medication. Could you please tell me what alcoholic cardiomyopathy is?

Doctor's answer:

Mostly occurs in men aged 30-55, usually with a history of excessive alcohol consumption for more than 10 years. The clinical manifestations are diverse, primarily characterized by heart failure and arrhythmia.
Arrhythmia
Arrhythmia can also be an early manifestation of this disease. The most common type is atrial fibrillation, followed by atrial flutter, frequent ventricular premature beats, atrial premature beats, and cardiac conduction block. Most arrhythmias require drug treatment or electrical cardioversion, but a few can spontaneously return to sinus rhythm. The same type of arrhythmia can recur repeatedly.
