Ogilvy worked as a chef and a cookware salesman in his early years, later moved to the United States, and served as an assistant research director at the George Gallup Audience Research Center. During World War II, he worked for the British Security Coordination (BSC) and the British Embassy in the U.S. Later, he became a farmer in Pennsylvania. In 1948, Ogilvy founded Ogilvy & Mather Advertising in New York with $6,000 and gained fame for creating many creative advertisements. His works were witty and charming, but most importantly: he insisted that they must help sell. He took the business and professionalism of the advertising industry to its peak, and his values gave rise to a global communication network. His wise and enduring style not only shaped Ogilvy & Mather but also deeply influenced the development of the entire advertising industry. The influential U.S. advertising industry publication Advertising Week said, "Ogilvy illuminated the entire advertising industry with his keen insights and critiques of traditional concepts, making it unattainable for any advertiser." A famous French magazine called him the "Pope of modern advertising" and ranked him alongside Edison, Einstein, and others as one of the most influential figures in the Industrial Revolution.
