Why newborns have low body temperature

Patient's question:

What kind of diseases can be treated in general internal medicine? Why is it that newborns have hypothermia?

Doctor's answer:

A body temperature between 36.5 and 37.5 is very normal. Sometimes being a degree or two higher or lower is not a big deal; just adjust the baby's clothing appropriately. A baby's temperature of 37.4 degrees is not a fever. A baby's temperature is slightly higher than an adult's, and a range of 36.5–37.5 is considered normal. If the baby's temperature exceeds 37.5 degrees, physical cooling methods can be used.
