What to do about discomfort in the liver area with fatty liver disease

Patient's question:

I have been experiencing some discomfort in my liver this year, often feeling a slight pain. I went to the hospital for a thorough examination and the results showed mild fatty liver. I would like to ask, what should I do about the discomfort in the liver area with fatty liver?

Doctor's answer:

Mild fatty liver can have no symptoms. After fatty liver develops, most people will show the following symptoms: loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, fatigue, abdominal pain, discomfort or mild pain in the liver area, and a decrease in alanine aminotransferase (ALT). A very small number of patients may experience mild jaundice. Physical examination may reveal an enlarged liver (usually within 2-3 cm below the right costal margin), with mild tenderness and, in some cases, percussion pain. Severe cases may develop symptoms of cirrhosis.
It is recommended that you have your liver function and blood lipid levels checked again. If you want to rule out hepatitis, you may also need to do the "five tests in pairs" (HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc, HBeAg, and anti-HBe). This is because there are several potential causes of fatty liver.
Do not take fatty liver lightly. Severe cases can lead to cirrhosis, which is difficult to treat. Therefore, it is important to identify the cause, receive timely treatment, and maintain proper health management.
