Can fatty liver disease be inherited?

Patient's question:

My husband has developed fatty liver, and it's quite severe. Just a few days ago, he had difficulty eating dinner—every time he ate, he would vomit. Over the past couple of days, he's been taking medication, which has slightly improved his condition. However, what worries me is that I'm currently pregnant. I'm truly heartbroken about the possibility that the child might inherit this disease through the generations. I've also been inwardly blaming my husband for this. Can fatty liver be inherited?

Doctor's answer:

Fatty liver is absolutely never inherited across generations. The reason is that fatty liver is caused by inflammation due to excessive fat accumulation within liver cells, and its onset is primarily associated with factors such as obesity, long-term beer consumption, diabetes, and nutritional endocrine disorders. It has absolutely no relation to hereditary genes. Since it is non-inheritable, fatty liver is never passed down across generations. Families with fatty liver have absolutely no need to worry about it being inherited to future generations. We hope you feel relieved. Fatty liver is a disease that is difficult to recover from. Friends with fatty liver should always maintain an optimistic attitude and face it with a positive mindset. Only in this way can they boost their confidence in combating fatty liver and believe that recovery is definitely possible.
