Features: This book discusses the current state of stability theory for thin-walled members, systematically introduces the linear theory of thin-walled members, the torsional buckling of thin-walled members under uniform stress, and presents the linear buckling theory of panels, section buckling, and the buckling of web plates of I-beam under various stress states. From simple to complex, it derives the total potential energy and the equilibrium differential equations for torsional buckling of thin-walled beams, introduces the critical bending moment of simply supported and cantilever beams, and develops the general theory of torsional buckling for thin-walled members. It studies the buckling of lateral-supported beams and columns, particularly discussing the support effect of corner braces and purlin support systems on beams or columns, the stability of steel crane beams with horizontal corner braces, the stability of crane beams mutually supported with bridge girders, and the stability of two-span continuous crane beams, etc. The book elaborates on the rigid-body test for elastic-plastic torsional buckling analysis of thin-walled members, develops nonlinear analysis theory and finite element methods and programs for elastic-plastic nonlinear analysis, and provides the transmission laws of warping displacement between beams and columns in two commonly used thin-walled beam-column joints. It proposes calculation formulas for torsional buckling of variable-section beams and conducts theoretical analysis on the distortion buckling of beams with rigid floor slab support on the upper flange, offering design recommendations and structural measures. This book can serve as a reference textbook for master's and doctoral students in structural engineering, as well as for students in engineering mechanics and professional fields such as bridge, shipbuilding, and machinery. New formulas for the stability calculation of simply supported and continuous crane beams, tapered variable-section beams, and the calculation method for torsional buckling of beams and columns under corner brace-purlin support systems, as well as the formula for calculating the stability of negative bending moment areas in frame beams, can be directly applied by engineering technicians.
