Features: Peonies, with large flower shapes and vibrant colors, have upright and varied stems and leaves. They are renowned as "the color of the nation" and "the first among all flowers." Peonies also symbolize "wealth, good fortune, happiness, and peace," hence the title "the flower of wealth," making them deeply loved by the general public. Peonies come in dozens of colors, including pink, deep red, purplish-red, yellow, and white. There are extremely rich varieties and names, such as the white "Songbai" and "Kunshan Nightlight," the pinkish-blue "Lantian Jade," the yellow "Yao Huang," the green "Dou Green," the light and dark lilac "Wei Zi" and "Pearl Pink," the silver-red "Ice-Coated Red Stone," the pink "Great Golden Powder," the peach-red "Great Red Sheared Velvet," the deep red "Zhuangyuan Hong," the purplish-red "Smoky Purple," and the near-black "Ink Sheared Velvet." There are also those with the same stem but different flowers, the same flower but different colors, and intermingled purple-pink hues like "Erqiao." Truly a riot of colors. Currently, Heze in Shandong and Luoyang in Henan are the regions in China with the most diverse peony varieties, boasting hundreds of types.
Peonies are deciduous shrubs that bloom in late spring with a captivating fragrance, surpassing all other flowers in beauty. The bark and roots of peonies are used as traditional Chinese medicine and hold significant economic value. Peonies thrive in cool climates, dislike extreme heat, fear severe cold, prefer dry conditions, and avoid waterlogging. Therefore, they are difficult to grow in rainy and humid southern regions. When painting, it is not advisable to use ponds or lakes as backgrounds, as this contradicts their ecological characteristics.
With numerous varieties and diverse artistic expressions throughout history, beginners do not need to cover everything. Instead, focus on understanding the ecological structure, shaping features, color variations, and the elegance of peonies to capture their essence. Through continuous painting practice, starting from the easy to the difficult, from the surface to the core, and selectively emphasizing or omitting details, while exaggerating or distorting to highlight the essence of peonies, one can achieve the goal of harmonizing form and spirit.
This introductory guide to painting peonies provides beginners with foundational knowledge and basic techniques, making it easier for everyone to understand and get started. As the saying goes, "Practice makes perfect." I wish everyone success in observing, thinking, and practicing, and in achieving fruitful results.
