Is hepatitis B really contagious?

Patient's question:

A while ago, during the health check organized by my workplace, I was found to have hepatitis B during a thorough examination. I know that hepatitis B is a contagious disease, and I didn't notice it during my previous check-ups. At the time of the examination, all my liver function tests were normal. I was told that hepatitis B can be transmitted, and I currently live with my family. I'm very worried about infecting them.

Doctor's answer:

Hepatitis B is primarily spread through three routes: blood, mother-to-child transmission, and sexual contact. Touching in daily life will never lead to infection. Some people believe that the hepatitis B virus is not transmitted through the digestive tract, meaning that sharing meals with hepatitis B patients or carriers will never result in infection. However, clinical diagnoses have revealed that in a small number of cases, transmission of hepatitis B is indeed related to dining. In some cases, it occurs after sharing meals with hepatitis B patients, while more often, it happens after eating at unhygienic restaurants or street-side tables. For severe hepatitis B patients, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly and follow the doctor's advice for timely treatment. Avoid blindly relying on advertisements for medication, as this could worsen the condition.
