Insect painting is a category within the bird-and-flower painting genre of Chinese painting. Although it falls under the broader category of bird-and-flower painting, it encompasses a wide range of subjects. Insect painting includes crustaceans, mollusks, reptiles, amphibians, and various fish species. It serves as a form and content of artistic expression, enduring and evolving over time. The reason lies in the painters who, based on reality, captured the distinctive features of their subjects, employing rich imagination to depict the diverse and lively small creatures with remarkable realism. Their classic works reflect poetic and artistic sentiments, inspiring endless associations and profound appreciation. Creating a compelling insect painting that embodies both form and spirit is no easy task. Beyond learning from the techniques and practical experiences of predecessors, painters must observe the myriad movements of insects, carefully study their every action, and continuously sketch and accumulate materials through long-term practice. Beginners in insect painting may refer to technical books for guidance, helping to enhance their rational understanding and technical knowledge. They can also copy the excellent works of renowned past and contemporary insect painters. Additionally, dedicated effort in sketching is essential. A painter must develop a sensory understanding of the insect's form, structure, color, movement, habits, and characteristics to improve adaptability and creative skill during the painting process.
When painting expressive insect paintings, simplicity is key in composition, color, and brushwork. Focus on capturing the key planes of the insect's body structure, using each brushstroke to define a part—clean and decisive, avoiding repetition and triviality. Capture the sense of motion, focusing on the moment an insect is crawling or preparing to leap, while also paying attention to seasonal variations. Different flowers bloom at different times of the year, and similarly, the insects paired with them must align with the season, adhering to natural laws. For instance, only bees are active in early spring; butterflies flutter gracefully only when the weather warms and flowers bloom in late spring; autumn, a season of flourishing flowers, is also a time of peak activity for a variety of autumn insects.
Insect paintings, though small in scale, require meticulous attention to detail. A slight oversight can distort their form. Therefore, capturing them vividly and accurately is challenging, demanding familiarity with their structure and mastery of their characteristics through frequent practice.
