Features: Orchids are one of China's famous flowers. They have lush, slender leaves, elegant and free-spirited, with graceful flower forms and a captivating fragrance. They are extraordinary, noble, and have long been revered as "beauties of the empty valley," "gentlemen of the flowers," "humble gentlemen," and "flowers of gentlemen." Due to their clear and subtle fragrance, unmatched by any other scent, they have been celebrated since ancient times as "the ancestor of fragrances," "the national fragrance," "the fragrance of kings," and "the fragrance of the world."
Additionally, because of their elegant beauty and distinction from other grasses, orchids are often symbolized as "beauty," "purity," "simplicity," "virtue," "chastity," and "elegance." They are commonly referred to as one of the "Four Elegant Flowers" alongside chrysanthemums, narcissus, and calamus, and are also known as one of the "Four Gentlemen" alongside plum blossoms, bamboo, and chrysanthemums. Thus, they have been loved by the general public throughout history and even more so by scholars and literati of past generations.
The ancients said, "Bamboo lasts a lifetime, while orchids last half a lifetime." This indicates that painting orchids and bamboo is indeed not an easy task. The ecological structure and color variations of orchids are far simpler and more concise compared to other flowers. At first glance, they may appear merely as a few intersecting and distributed dots and lines. However, the challenge lies in the word "simplicity." Painting requires "simplicity," meaning no unnecessary strokes are allowed. "Simplicity" demands that less achieve more, with concise brushwork conveying profound meaning. "Simplicity" also requires every stroke to show skill, leaving no room for hidden weaknesses. Therefore, it can be said that the difficulty of painting orchids is no less than that of painting bamboo.
Zheng Banqiao once wrote a poem: "To understand the art of painting, one must master calligraphy—orchids and bamboo are like cursive and clerical scripts." Thus, to paint orchids well, one must also possess a solid foundation and skill in calligraphy to achieve "incorporating calligraphy into painting." Especially, one must frequently observe, understand, and appreciate the growth postures and spiritual essence of various orchids in nature, practice sketches and exercises, and remember, "There are no insurmountable challenges in the world, only those who lack determination." Keep striving.
