Features: Modern College English Intensive Reading is an intensive reading textbook for college English majors published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. It is a highly popular and widely adopted excellent textbook in universities across the country. The content is rich and covers a broad range of topics, yet it presents varying levels of difficulty. To help college English majors implement new teaching objectives in their regular textbook studies, adapt to new examination requirements, and comprehensively and systematically improve their overall language proficiency while aligning with future exams to enhance their test-taking skills, we have invited a team of frontline teachers with a deep understanding of English major teaching reform and examination reform, as well as extensive teaching experience. Through dedicated research and scientific design, they have innovatively launched this series of Comprehensive Study Guides for Newly Compiled English Textbooks. This series of textbook guides fully embodies four interactive features:
1. Interaction between textbook learning and humanities knowledge learning
Each unit provides multiple cultural background materials related to the text, allowing you to broaden your horizons, enrich your knowledge, and enhance your humanities literacy while studying the text, thereby expanding textbook learning into a comprehensive humanities education.
2. Interaction between reading comprehension and writing appreciation
While explaining the text and improving your reading skills, we analyze and evaluate the text from multiple perspectives such as writing style and techniques, thereby synchronously enhancing your writing appreciation abilities.
3. Interaction between language application and exam preparation
While comprehensively improving students' comprehensive language application skills through text study and explanation, we also integrate them with the CET-4 and CET-6 exams, achieving synchronous improvement in both application and test-taking abilities.
4. Interaction between post-reading exercise solutions and systematic knowledge organization
In addition to providing authoritative and detailed answers to post-reading exercises and workbook problems, we also systematically organize related linguistic points and knowledge, achieving interactive improvement.
This book is the third volume of the Comprehensive Study Guides for Modern College English. The structure and features of each unit are as follows:
Bilingual Cultural Background Reading
This section provides bilingual cultural background extensions, introducing relevant cultural knowledge related to the text (including customs, festivals, related figures, literary works, etc.), helping students better understand the text while broadening their knowledge, accumulating information, and enhancing their cultural literacy in English and American studies.
Text Style Analysis and Appreciation
This section evaluates the writing style of the text and analyzes its discourse structure, extracting key content to help students improve their overall understanding of discourse, writing, and structure, as well as their writing skills.
Core Vocabulary and Phrases Learning
Following the bilingual definitions provided in the New Words and Phrases section, this part fully utilizes the widely popular "Spark-like Memory Method" to memorize and recall core vocabulary and phrases from the text. We have shifted away from the rote memorization of words and phrases often found in many textbook guides, emphasizing the "dual combination" teaching philosophy of "memorizing words through visuals and context." For frequently tested vocabulary and phrases in the text, we help students remember them through picture-assisted memorization, contextual memorization, and comparative explanations.
Long and Complex Sentence Framework Analysis
This section analyzes the framework of long and complex sentences in each text, pointing out methods to break them down, cultivating students' perception and analytical abilities for complex sentence clusters, synchronously enhancing their reading comprehension skills, and improving their translation proficiency.
Exercise Solutions with Authoritative Explanations
Following the bilingual definitions in the New Words and Phrases section, this part provides authoritative and detailed answers to all post-reading exercises in the Student Book. At the same time, the authors of this book—seasoned educators with years of experience in frontline English teaching—have explained some of the exercises, pinpointing students' knowledge weaknesses and offering truly insightful guidance.
Additionally, this book includes supplementary reading materials on current affairs, adding fun to the text reading experience while helping students improve their reading skills.
