Is it serious to get a stomach ulcer disease?

Patient's question:

Started having regular lower abdominal pain six months ago, sometimes with slight blood in the stool, and the stool is a bit dark. A few days ago, I went to the hospital for an X-ray, and after a careful examination, it was found to be a gastric ulcer. Is it serious?

Doctor's answer:

Multiple different drugs can be used in combination for treatment: [1] Gastric mucosal protectants, such as sucralfate [2] H2 histamine receptor antagonists, such as cimetidine [3] Antacids, such as magnesium hydroxide—aluminum hydroxide combination [4] Antibiotics to inhibit Helicobacter pylori, such as amoxicillin [5] Proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole.
Surgical therapy: For long-term, severe, elderly patients with peptic ulcers, or those with complications such as major bleeding, perforation, strictured intestinal obstruction, or a history of cancer, partial or subtotal gastrectomy is often performed. This surgical procedure is well-established. Severe gastric ulcer patients are advised to seek medical attention.
