Is an ultrasound examination accurate for detecting kidney cysts?

Patient's question:

Recently, I've been feeling unwell, and after checking, I found out it's a kidney cyst. But I'm not really convinced by this, as I thought ultrasound is used for things like the lungs, not the kidneys. I'm feeling particularly upset. Is a kidney cyst a very serious condition? Is an ultrasound examination for kidney cysts accurate?

Doctor's answer:

B is accurate for a detailed examination of kidney cysts, but it is not accurate for a detailed examination of the lungs. B generally cannot provide a detailed examination of organs containing gas or bones. Kidney cysts can usually be diagnosed through a detailed B examination. If kidney cysts reappear, early examination is generally required to diagnose their specific size. Very large kidney cysts or those affecting kidney function may require surgical treatment.
