Is it serious if a woman has a cyst in her right kidney?

Patient's question:

Today I went with my friend for a thorough check-up, and I also got an ultrasound done. I found that I have some problems with my kidneys. The doctor told me I have a right kidney cyst. I'm very worried and upset about getting a serious illness. I want to know if a female right kidney cyst is serious? Can it cause great harm to the body?

Doctor's answer:

The cyst itself is just a benign inflammation and generally will not cause any impact on the body. Whether treatment is needed depends on the size and other conditions of the cyst. If the cyst is small and causes no discomfort, there is no need for treatment. Just regular daily follow-up with ultrasound to monitor if it decreases is sufficient. However, if the cyst is larger, such as below 10 centimeters, surgery should be considered. There is no need to take medication to treat the cyst, as it is ineffective.
