What does a thyroid nodule TIRADS 3 class mean?

Patient's question:

The last time I went to the hospital for a thorough check-up, the doctor said I had thyroid nodules and recommended that I undergo a comprehensive examination. In these past few days, I took some time out to go to the hospital for a thyroid examination. What does a thyroid nodule ti-rads 3 category mean?

Doctor's answer:

Generally, thyroid nodules are divided into 6 categories. Types 1 and 2 are benign and only require periodic follow-up ultrasound examinations without special intervention. However, for nodules of Types 4 and above, the likelihood of malignancy gradually decreases, and a pathological examination through fine-needle aspiration biopsy or surgical removal is necessary to determine their nature. Only Type 3 nodules, although they tend to be benign, still carry a certain risk of malignant transformation, so close monitoring is required. Generally, an ultrasound examination should be repeated every 2-3 months. If there is a malignant transformation, early surgical treatment should be initiated.
