Bamboo slips are one of the oldest forms of books in China, used for over 1,600 years in ancient times. By the late Eastern Jin Dynasty, Emperor Heng Xuan ordered the replacement of bamboo slips with paper, marking the gradual disappearance of bamboo slips.
The bamboo slips in this book are made from high-quality Mao bamboo grown for over 10 years on Ma'er Mountain, the source of the Li River in Guilin, known as the land where landscapes are unparalleled under the sky. Due to its unique climate and water quality, the bamboo grown here has fine fibers and a soft texture. Due to the high craftsmanship and strict material selection, the production team spent 60 days carefully selecting 1,200 cubic meters of bamboo from a vast bamboo forest. Under the guidance of 98-year-old bamboo art master "Gardener Bai Ding," his disciples crafted the bamboo slips entirely by hand over a year. This process involves over 30 steps, including material selection, removing the green layer, preventing deformation, preventing decay, sanding, polishing, connecting, and printing, before finally being bound into books.
Each book uses 208 bamboo slips, each measuring 30 cm in length, with the entire book spanning 400 cm. It was inscribed by the master bamboo slip calligrapher Zhang Youqing. A total of 1,000 sets were made, with each set featuring a pure bronze-plated gold inner cover and a Suzhou three-color brocade gilt outer cover, accompanied by a 24K pure gold collector’s card.
