Features: I was born in 1977 and after studying abroad for many years, I returned to Taipei. For the first time, someone asked me, "What year and class are you from?" Later, I learned it was asking about my birth year under the Republic of China era. I was in the sixth grade of the sixth class. I was often asked, "What do sixth-grade girls like?" According to my observations, my friends—a group of sixth-grade girls—would light up their eyes when they heard certain things.
At the age of 14, I wanted to go to Japan alone. I knew that as long as I said it, Grandpa Cai would definitely agree. So I shared my wish, and Grandpa Cai, as I suspected, wholeheartedly supported me. My dear mother, on the other hand, sadly saw me off at the airport. Two weeks later, I returned home safely.
I bet you're curious about what a 14-year-old me did in Japan? At that time, the term "obsessed with Japan" didn't exist, and I didn't choose Japan for that reason either. Anyway, I stayed in a hotel and lived a carefree life, enjoying shopping, eating, and playing by myself. Back then, I didn't speak Japanese, and it was a bit boring alone, but being alone wasn't so bad either. Then I went home, and then I went abroad again. Alone in Sleep is a record of my drawing and writing about my studies and life in the United States.
