Author: Balzac
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2003-08-01
Features: The protagonist of this book, "Bons," is a sincere and kind-hearted musician who is passionate about collecting various famous paintings. For this purpose, he is willing to pay any price and go to great lengths. This novel sets up two contrasting characters. Bons was originally an obscure figure, but when people learn that he possesses this invaluable treasure of artworks, all kinds of characters try in every way to obtain them, employing all sorts of methods. While others also desire the precious artworks, for Bons, it is a spiritual pursuit of joy and a kind of soulful solace. For others, however, it is merely a symbol of money. These two completely opposite attitudes form a striking contrast. Balzac, in this novel, still maintains his original concise and refined language, as well as his natural and elegant style. I believe readers will surely appreciate the simple and profound beauty within. We can once again gain a deep and thorough understanding of various types of characters. Although Balzac lived in a time far removed from ours, modern readers may initially find it strange. However, the eternal human nature, regardless of when or where, remains fundamentally unchanged.
