How to check for AIDS and hepatitis B?

Patient's question:

Can you get tested for HIV and hepatitis B at the hospital 2 weeks after engaging in high-risk behavior? Is the chance of detection high?

Doctor's answer:

Due to the HIV window period being 1-3 months, HIV antibody testing can be performed within 2 to 8 weeks of high-risk behavior. If the result is negative, transmission can generally be ruled out. If you still have concerns about the test results, you can wait until 3 months later to test again. If it remains negative, transmission can be ruled out. HIV testing is divided into preliminary screening and diagnostic testing. A positive preliminary screening result does not diagnose HIV and requires further diagnostic testing. After contracting the hepatitis B virus, the first marker to appear in the serum is the hepatitis B surface antigen. The duration of its appearance is related to the route and amount of transmission.
