Features: Chinese calligraphy is unique in the world. Through the endless variations of black and white, dots and lines, it achieves spiritual creation and emotional expression. The spiritual essence it embodies is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture. As descendants of the Chinese nation, we should all feel proud and honored to possess this invaluable and rich cultural heritage.
The television documentary Millennium of Calligraphy was produced by the CCTV Exploration and Discovery program team over a period of two years. It accompanies the eight-episode television series of the same name, also titled Millennium of Calligraphy. This book introduces six calligraphy masters—Wang Xizhi, Yan Zhenqing, Su Shi, Zhao Mengfu, Dong Qichang, and Liu Yong—who led the styles of calligraphy across dynasties from the Jin to the Qing periods (a span of 1,500 years). Through their introductions, we see their vivid personalities and diverse life trajectories.
In addition to including the classic narration from the documentary and insightful interviews with scholars, the book also features supplementary writings by Mr. San Gui, a renowned calligraphy scholar in China, to elaborate on the concepts and figures discussed. This provides readers with a more comprehensive and rational understanding of the long-standing history of Chinese calligraphy.
The book also selects over 150 exquisite ink works by famous calligraphers and related historical artifacts, not only enriching readers' understanding of the development of calligraphy art but also immersing them in the splendid culture of the Chinese nation. The esteemed calligrapher Mr. Ouyang Zhongshi has kindly inscribed the title for this book.
