Do hepatitis B patients need to take liver-protecting drugs?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, I have had hepatitis B for over ten years. Today, an ultrasound confirmed chronic hepatitis B, but my liver enzymes are normal. Do I need to take liver-protecting medication? Do I need to take antiviral medication? Thank you

Doctor's answer:

It is recommended to improve the quantitative tests for hepatitis B five items, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, hepatitis B virus DNA, liver fibrosis, coagulation series, complete blood count, and magnetic resonance imaging of the liver, spleen, and gallbladder. The choice should be based on expertise in liver protection or the implementation of hepatitis B virus treatment. The goal of hepatitis B virus treatment is to suppress viral replication, increase transmissibility, stabilize or reduce liver damage, improve quality of life, and prevent or delay the recurrence of liver cirrhosis, liver failure, or hepatocellular carcinoma. Therefore, patients who meet the indications should be treated with antiviral therapy as much as possible.
