Features: Since the publication of A Guide to Social Survey (Revised Edition) in April 1996, it has been more than six years. If we count from August 1994 when the manuscript was finalized, it has been more than eight years. These eight years have been a time of great changes in the world, a period of rapid development in China, and also a time of continuous progress in social survey and the study of social survey. Compared to these eight years at the turn of the century, A Guide to Social Survey (Revised Edition) has become outdated in both content and form, requiring a thorough revision. From April 1996 to March 2002, the (Revised Edition) has been printed nine times and distributed 91,000 copies, with an average annual distribution of around 15,000 copies—nearly a 50% increase compared to the average annual distribution of approximately 10,000 copies from June 1988 to April 1996 of A Guide to Social Survey. Clearly, this textbook has established a relatively stable readership since its release, and the annual distribution continues to rise. According to statistics based on 300 sales records (representing 33.1% of the total distribution, or 56,951 copies), A Guide to Social Survey and its revised edition have covered 289 units across 27 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China. The readership primarily consists of: faculty and students of social science disciplines in higher education institutions, teachers and students in various levels of Party schools, administrative colleges, and training classes, researchers in various types of social science research institutes, as well as staff in research departments of government agencies at all levels and various enterprises and public institutions. To better revise A Guide to Social Survey (Revised Edition) and meet the actual needs of this readership, we have conducted visits to some readers and carried out correspondence surveys.
