Can active hepatitis lead to cirrhosis?

Patient's question:

I had two instances of elevated ALT levels reaching 60 in 2003 and 2005. After treatment, they returned to normal. Since 2005, I have been periodically checked for liver function, B, AFP, and DNA liver fibrosis, and all results have been normal. Recently, a doctor told me that my condition is considered exercise-induced hepatitis. I saw online that once the mechanism of exercise-induced hepatitis is triggered, cirrhosis cannot be reversed. I am very worried.

Doctor's answer:

Hello: The situation is as follows: If hepatitis flares up repeatedly and remains very active, continuously causing damage to liver cells, it may lead to cirrhosis over a long period. To be precise, once the mechanism of cirrhosis is triggered, it cannot be reversed. And you don't have cirrhosis yet, so there's no need to worry. Moreover, your liver function has only shown mild abnormalities on several occasions, which is not sufficient to cause such severe liver damage. Do you understand?
The suggestion is to focus on regular liver function tests. Do your best to maintain normal liver function as much as possible! I think you should adjust your mindset slightly, which will greatly benefit your condition!
