Features: In 2004, the College English Test Band 4 and Band 6 (CET-4 and CET-6) was introduced with a new syllabus. The new syllabus clearly states that starting from 2005, the new CET-4 and CET-6 exams will place greater emphasis on assessing students' fundamental English skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation) as well as their basic knowledge at three levels: vocabulary, syntax, and discourse. The exams will also focus more on reflecting students' comprehensive language application abilities, highlight the professional and humanities aspects of the tests, and increase the assessment of cultural and sociolinguistic knowledge. Newly Compiled English Course (Revised Edition) is a comprehensive reading textbook published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, designed for college English majors. It is a highly popular and widely adopted excellent textbook in many universities across China. The textbook is rich in content and covers a broad range of topics, with many passages extracted from authentic English and American texts. While students are immersed in cultural knowledge, they may also encounter varying levels of difficulty. To help English majors align their learning with the new teaching objectives and exam requirements, improve their comprehensive language skills systematically, and enhance their test-taking abilities, we have invited a team of frontline teachers with a deep understanding of English major teaching reform and exam reform, as well as extensive teaching experience, to meticulously research and design this series of Newly Compiled English Course Companions.
This series of companions features four interactive characteristics:
1. Integration of Textbook Learning and Humanities Knowledge
Each unit provides multiple cultural background readings related to the main text, allowing students to broaden their horizons, enrich their knowledge, and enhance their humanities education while studying the course material, thereby expanding textbook learning into a comprehensive humanities education.
2. Dual Improvement of Reading Comprehension and Writing Appreciation
While explaining the text and improving reading skills, this companion analyzes and evaluates the writing style and techniques of the text, helping students enhance their writing appreciation skills simultaneously.
3. Synchronized Enhancement of Language Application and Test-Taking Abilities
The textbook learning and explanations are designed to comprehensively improve students' language application skills while closely aligning with the CET-4 and CET-6 exams, ensuring both practical and exam-oriented progress.
4. Organic Combination of After-Class Exercise Solutions and Systematic Knowledge Organization
The solutions to after-class exercises and workbook problems are provided with authoritative and detailed explanations. Additionally, related linguistic points and knowledge are systematically organized, promoting interactive improvement.
